Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman corrected science and technology minister Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday by reminding him that Thai Airways has been operating in the country for over a decade.

The federal minister on July 2, tweeted and announced that Thai Airways was starting operation from Lahore to Bangkok and beyond from July 16 this year.

Soon after the science minister's tweet, social media reacted to the statement.

Sherry also took to Twitter and reminded Fawad that Thai Airways had been flying from Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi several times a week for over a decade.

Earlier in February this year, Thai Airways had cancelled all flights over Pakistan after Islamabad closed its airspace in response to soaring tensions with India. Thousands of holidaymakers were stranded in Bangkok due to the decision.

According to the Thai flag carrier, 27 flights, a majority to and from European routes, were cancelled with three passenger jets forced to return to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport in February.

Nearly 5,000 passengers were caught up in the cancellation of flights.

Flights to London, Paris, Brussels, Milan and Munich were all cancelled while 10 incoming flights from Europe were also scratched.

The cancellations were a blow to Thai Airways during one of the country’s most popular travel periods.
