PESHAWAR: The Canal Task Force has set up four teams under the supervision of irrigation officers has started an operation in Board Bazaar of Peshawar to remove encroachment and divert sewerage lines which have been polluting canals of the city. Moreover, shopkeepers were warned of a crackdown for dumping waste in canals

The teams were formed during the first meeting of a special task force comprising officials of the Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP), Irrigation and police, Peshawar Development Authority (PDA), the district government and town municipal administration (TMAs).

WSSP Chief Executive Officer Syed Zafar Shah has been named as the chairman of the task force while PDA Director Imtiaz Saleem is the deputy chairman. The task force has decided to implement directives of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) in letter and spirit.

The teams comprise officials from WSSP, PDA, police, TMAs and district administration. Sub-divisional officers of the irrigation department are also a part of the team.

In the first phase of the short-term strategy devised by the task force, operations will be launched against commercial and large sewerage lines by targeting government departments first.
