Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan says PML-N must honour court decision

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz has said all doors of justice are closed on former prime minister and her father Nawaz Sharif, who, according to her, spoke about rule of people and fought for upholding the Constitution and law in the country.

“However, it must be remembered that when tyranny crosses all limits, it is uprooted [and] a system based on kufur [infidelity] can survive but not the one based on oppression,” Maryam wrote on Twitter on Thursday after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected Nawaz’s plea for bail on medical grounds.

Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment after being found guilty in Al-Azizia reference, one of the three graft cases filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in line with the Supreme Court’s 2017 Panama Papers judgement.

The Supreme Court had granted him a six-week bail on March 26 to get medical treatment. A bail extension plea was later rejected.

However, the three-time former premier approached the IHC for suspension of his sentence on medical grounds – a request that was rejected by a two-judge IHC bench.

Apparently reacting to decision, Maryam added that she would, however, raise voice against oppression; go to any length in her fight against it and would ultimately get justice for people’s real representative Nawaz Sharif.

“[You can] put me behind bars, [you can] imprison me. You are afraid of these things [not I]. The game played against Nawaz Sharif would be known to all soon,” she added.

Responding to her tweets, Special Assistant to PM on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said Maryam Nawaz had recently commended the judiciary for its independence.

“Today, instead of lamenting about a court decision, you should respect it. These are the court which are not subordinate to you and are working independently,” she added.
