India were held up by rain, and a defiant sixth-wicket stand between Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels on the second day of the second Test against West Indies.
Only 25.3 overs were possible, as West Indies reached 98 for five, in response to India’s first-innings of 201.
Ishant Sharma gave the visitors two early wickets, but Samuels (21*) and Chanderpaul (20*) added an unbroken partnership of 41 to restore some stability.
Sharma, who finished the day with three for 31, exploited the Kensington Oval pitch and the overcast conditions to remove night-watchman Devendra Bishoo and Ramnaresh Sarwan after the hosts resumed on 30 for three.
West Indies coach Otis Gibson, although disappointed by his batsmen’s show, was looking forward to a better performance. “We’re looking forward to the remaining days,” said Gibson. “The second day was badly rain-interrupted and that’s history. The bowlers again did their job very well, and they deserve the praise,” he said. “It is good to see the see them putting in the hard work and getting the rewards.”
