KARACHI:

The drastically decreasing allowed consignment weight on trucks carried on highway is going to raise the cost of doing business, which is against the government’s policies of promoting ease of doing business, said Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) President Junaid Esmail Makda.

He urged the Ministry of Communications to put the recently implemented axle load regime on hold as it was not agreed upon by all stakeholders, including the goods transporters and representatives of the business and industrial community.

Recently, the government has limited consignment weight carried on highway to 15 tons only in order to maintain the roads. However, container trucks do not weigh less than 20 to 25 tons normally.

He was of the opinion that the cost of doing business has risen sharply nowadays due to upsurge in dollar, imposition of regulatory duties and an upward revision of utility tariffs.
