Pakistan on Thursday reiterated that continued denial of the right to self-determination to people of Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK) was not only a travesty of justice but also an egregious violation of the United Nations (UN) Charter, according to Radio Pakistan.

Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi made the statement while addressing a special meeting of the assembly to commemorate the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for peace in New York.

She urged the international community to stand united against any attempts to undermine the sanctity of the UN Charter or to reinterpret its fundamental provisions to suit narrow aims.

The Muslim-majority Himalayan region has been at the heart of more than 70 years of animosity, since the partition of the British colony of the sub-continent into the separate countries of Muslim Pakistan and majority Hindu India.

The dispute over the former princely state sparked two wars between Pakistan and India and Pakistan after independence 1947.
