Poppy cultivation down by 87%

The government of K-P receives a contribution of seven new pickup trucks from the US

PESHAWAR: Pakistan has reduced poppy cultivation by 87 per cent over past three decades with the United States’ partnership and wanted to be partner in these ongoing efforts, said a release of the US Consulate here Friday. In a bid to continue to combat poppy growth, the government of K-P received a contribution of seven new pickup trucks from the US. The K-P government will use the vehicles to implement crop control and related development projects in the districts of Bajaur, Mohmand, and Khyber. The donation is part of an overall Rs589 million donation to the provincial government to combat poppy cultivation in the merged areas. Deputy Chief of Mission John Hoover said: “We are proud to continue our longstanding partnership with the K-P government and former FATA Secretariat, which has resulted in a significant decrease in poppy cultivation, ultimately benefitting the people of KP and the rest of Pakistan.”
