Actor-wrestler John Cena is eyeing a role in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel.

According to sources, Cena is in talks to join actors Idris Elba and Margot Robbie in the follow-up to the 2016 hit, reported The Hollywood Reporter. Robbie is set to return as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney will be back as Captain Boomerang.

It was first reported that Warner Bros decided to have Elba play a  new character instead of taking on Deadshot, portrayed by Will Smith in the first film. Details about who Cena and Elba will be essaying are being kept under wraps.

The team did not want Smith to feel disrespected by replacing him with Elba. Many believe chances are still slim for Smith's return in the future since he initially exited the project due to scheduling issues and creative differences.

James Gunn will write and direct the movie. It is scheduled to hit  theatres on August 6, 2021. The film will mark Cena's first comic book role. The WWE giant made his foray into acting after years of wrestling.

Cena's latest big screen outing includes Blockers, alongside Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz. He has also starred in the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee with Hailee Steinfeld.

Cena has been tapped by fellow WWE alum Dwayne Johnson to star in The Janson Directive. He will also voice a character in the fantasy adventure The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, co-starring Robert Downey Jr and Selena Gomez.

The original Suicide Squad - starring Smith, Jared Leto and Robbie - became a massive box office sensation when it released in 2016, grossing $746 million worldwide.Have something to add to the story? Share it in the comments below.
