LAHORE: The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has removed a backlog of 12,500 tons of waste from the city.

LWMC Managing Director Khalid Nazir said his teams toiled endlessly over the weekend to clear the waste backlog.

Over the past week, the city experienced waste collection issues due to a series of disruptions as workers of a Turkish contractor went on a strike..

Over the last four days, the LWMC MD highlighted that the company made an extra effort to utilise additional resources, including the hiring of machinery to clear the waste collection backlog and to clean the garbage arising from different locations of the city.

Moreover, Nazir said the field staff was instructed to prioritise service delivery to help citizens remove heaps of waste from 550 points. The city now appears to be near and tidy.

He said the department is working on routine operations and the company could not maintain cleanliness without the cooperation of the public. "If citizens pay attention to their basic civil and social responsibility, we can collectively achieve the goal of a clean Lahore."

General Manager Operations Sohail Anwar Malik said LWMC explored all possible means for removal of solid waste in a timely manner. Turkish contractors were ordered to ensure all staff and machinery remained in the field till the city is sparkling. Company Spokesperson Jamil Khawar said LWMC is conducting cleanliness awareness drives at multiple locations to sensitise the public on proper waste disposal.

If citizens have any complaints over cleanliness in their locality, they can report them to helpline 1139 or use the mobile application ‘Clean Lahore’ to address their complaints.
