ISLAMABAD: Pakistan produced 7.1 million tons rice during Kharif season of fiscal year 2018-19, higher than targeted 6.9 million tons, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). However, compared to the crop’s harvest during the previous fiscal year, the production fell by 4.4% in the period under review, stated SBP’s first quarterly report on the State of Pakistan’s Economy for FY19. While the basmati performance in Punjab was laudable following the estimated production crossed the four million-ton mark, the production in Sindh suffered a contraction of 15.2% on a year-on-year basis. The fall came largely due to a contraction in the area under cultivation. Variety-wise, breakdown suggests that the production of basmati increased in Punjab on the back of an expansion in area sown.
