86% cases involving missing, disappeared person resolved, claims Sindh govt

Out of the 3,758 disappeared or missing people, whereabouts of 3,258 have been found, claims report

KARACHI: The Sindh home department on Wednesday claimed to have resolved 86 per cent cases related to forced disappearances and missing persons.

According to Express News, the Sindh home department made a report on the missing persons after the European Union asked Islamabad to provide details in this regard.

The federal government had ordered the provinces to formulate their individual reports.



The report, which will soon be sent to the capital said, “In Sindh, a total of 3,758 people disappeared or were missing out of which, whereabouts of 3,258 people have been found by the law enforcement agencies.”

“The cases of only 520 people are yet to be resolved,” continued the report.

Some 156 cases are being entertained at the Missing Persons’ Commission and 364 cases of forced disappearances at the Sindh High Court (SHC).

The Sindh home department maintained in its report that a decision was made to give the families of 23 missing persons Rs500,000 each.



Meanwhile, it was also claimed in the report that the Sindh government had closed cases of the same nature from other provinces as well.

The issue of forced disappearances and missing persons has been pressing in the country for many years now.

In December 2018, the SHC had expressed dissatisfaction over a police’s report regarding the recovery of missing persons.

The United Nations and international human rights organisations, including Human Rights Watch, on several occasion previously voiced concerns about the forced disappearances and missing persons in Pakistan.
