LAHORE: The Punjab government on Friday formed a new medical board, comprising heart specialists, to examine the health of the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently serving jail sentence in Adiala prison.
The medical board will present its recommendations after a complete diagnosis. The board was formed after the government refuted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) claims regarding Sharif’s deteriorating health.
Speaking to reporters outside the Punjab Assembly, provincial Information Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan accused Sharif's daughter, Maryam Nawaz, of making unnecessary hue and cry over the former premier’s health.
“The Sharifs should stop lying,” he said. “He is a high profile criminal, yet the federal and provincial governments have not placed any restrictions on him. He still receives food from home.”

Chohan’s statements come after Maryam Nawaz had said that her father was suffering from heart problems. “He has had multiple episodes in the last few days which he has been treating with sublingual sprays & tablets. They took him back to jail yesterday, conveniently turning a blind eye to the recommendations of the doctors and boards,” she had tweeted.

Sharif’s physician Dr Adnan Khan said the medical board at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology had diagnosed “moderate inferolateral partially reversible perfusion defect on thallium scan which translates into lack of blood supply to a portion of heart”.

The deposed premier is currently serving a seven-year imprisonment at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail, after he was convicted by an accountability court in the Al-Aziza corruption reference case filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
He was taken for a medical examination to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology this week on the recommendation of a special three-member medical board comprising Professor Dr Shahid Hameed, Dr Sajjad Ahmed and Dr Hamid Khalil.
