Mystery surrounds rare python’s sudden death at Lahore Zoo

Indian rock python was completely fine the night before it died, according to zoo administration

LAHORE: An Indian rock python was found dead in mysterious circumstances at Lahore Zoo on Wednesday. The rare serpent’s body has been sent for an autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of death.

The Lahore Zoo administration revealed that six pythons were being housed at the zoo out of which one suddenly died today.

The python had been brought to the zoo eight years ago but the administration remains unsure about the serpent’s exact age.



Speaking to Express News, Senior Veterinary Officer Dr Rizwan said that the python was completely fine the night before it died. However, officials found it dead in its cage on Wednesday morning. As a result, the population of pythons has been reduced to five snakes, he said.

The Pythonidae, commonly known as pythons, are a family of nonvenomous snakes found in Africa, Asia and Australia. Among its members are some of the largest snakes in the world. In Asia, they are found in Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
