Sindh budget: Rs15m endowment fund for artists

Abdul Aziz Uqaili said the department had released a sum of Rs1.5 million for Abro’s treatment.

HYDERABAD: The Sindh Budget 2011-2012 has earmarked Rs15 million for the endowment fund for artists, said culture secretary Abdul Aziz Uqaili on Tuesday.

During a condolence visit at the residence of novelist and playwright, Tariq Alam Abro, he said the department had released a sum of Rs1.5 million for Abro’s treatment. The novelist passed away on Saturday in Civil Hospital, Karachi.

Praising Abro for his unforgettable services to Sindhi literature, the secretary announced that the culture department will publish all of the writer’s unpublished work. Tariq Alam Abro has 20 teleplays and several novels and short stories to his credit. Last year, the culture department endowed a sum of Rs8 million to 21 ailing artists, according to Uqaili.
