ISLAMABAD: The national flag carrier on Sunday announced that it will discontinue its flights to Tokyo, Japan owing to financial losses.

With Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) buried in increasing debt, the airline's management has decided to suspend flights from Beijing to Tokyo from February 15.

Following the closure of the route, PIA flights will be restricted to Beijing.

Mashood Tajwar, the airline's spokesperson, said the step has been taken in view of incurring an annual loss of Rs300 million from its Tokyo flights.

Tajwar added that the route has been discontinued to cut down on PIA losses.

Last year, the airline had suspended its operations to Kuwait and Salalah, Oman. The decision followed the suspension of flights to New York, where PIA said ran into heavy losses.
