KARACHI:

The Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU) has retained seniors Sahir Aslam and Sair Riaz for the Asian Five Nations (A5N) Tournament while Kashif Khwaja and UAE-based player Adnan Niazi were also called up for the event that starts on June 22 in Jakarta.

The 24-member squad, announced by the PRU yesterday, will take on Guam in their opening match of the Division III competition. This will be followed by a match against Iran or China which acts as a head-on battle to avoid relegation to Division VI.

Pakistan’s squad comprises two UK-based players, Immad Hussain and Junaid Imtiaz, while UAE’s Azmat will also represent the team in Jakarta.

Meanwhile, Aslam and PRU coach Rizwan Malik both feel the team has an opportunity to climb to Division II as Pakistan have a good record against Guam.

“There are more seniors than young players and I think experience is the key to win these matches,” Aslam told The Express Tribune. “I’m happy that Khwaja, who was injured last time, is back in the squad. Players from the UK and UAE will be a great help.”
