QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal has said that lack of sincerity in rooting out corruption from the initial stages has caused lingering problems for the provincial government and the masses.

“The Chief Minister’s Inspection Team (CMIT) has identified 600 development schemes in Balochistan that are limited to paperwork. Today the future of millions of people depends on our policies,” the chief minister said at a ceremony hosted by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Balochistan on Wednesday.

During the ceremony, NAB Balochistan Director General Muhammad Abid Javed presented to the CM a cheque of Rs462.575 million recovered by the accountability watchdog from corrupt officers.

Criticising previous governments, Kamal said the worst precedent of corruption was set in Balochistan during the past 10 years. He said people must understand that the country and the province had been greatly damaged by corruption and now it’s time to undo the old practices.

“Our religion teaches us self-accountability. Without following what our religion says against corruption, we would continue to sink into corruption that is the root cause of all evils,” Kamal said.

Talking about the financial problems of the provincial government, the CM said the pensioners’ bill in Balochistan had reached Rs21 billion. The total revenue of the province is Rs15 billion, while the remaining amount is received from other sources. He stressed that Balochistan needed a large amount to overcome its financial problems.

Kamal lamented that despite having precious minerals, oil, gas and other natural resources, the country had been begging for loans from other countries, “which is the most degrading moment for us”.

Addressing the ceremony, NAB DG Javed said the founder of the country had explained the types of corruption in his first speech. “Without collective efforts we can’t stamp out the menace of corruption.”

He assured the provincial government that NAB won’t repeat the practice of sending letters to halt development funds, adding that the bureau was making earnest efforts to recover the government’s looted money.

“Without the support of bureaucracy we can’t win our battle against corruption in the country,” the DG added.
