First minority member to present budget

Kamran Michael will be the first non-Muslim finance minister ever to present the budget.

LAHORE:

Provincial Finance Minister Kamran Michael will become the first minister belonging to a group of minorities to present the budget in the assembly in the 63-year history of the country.

He will be bestowed this honour as he presents the provincial budget on Friday (today) in the Punjab Assembly.

The decision, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said, was in line with the policy announced by the father of the nation Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, which he announced on August 11, 1947 while addressing the ‘Constituent Assembly’.

According to a PML-N handout, the PML-N has provided minorities opportunities to take part in the nation-building process. Kamran Michael has been given the additional charge of the finance ministry.

The decision to appoint him is intended to restore the country’s image abroad.
