K-P CM directs early provision of facilities at shelter homes

CM Mahmood pays surprise visit to Peshawar Central Jail, checks food, lodgings of inmates

PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has directed early provision of all basic facilities at shelters homes by December 4 and sought a summary for the establishment of three more shelter homes in Peshawar.

He was presiding over a meeting at CM Secretariat here on Wednesday. Chief Secretary Naveed Kamran Baloch, Secretary Social Welfare, Secretary Auqaf and Commissioner Peshawar were also attended.  The meeting focused rehabilitation of existing shelter homes and opening of new facility of the same kind in Peshawar.

Addressing a meeting, CM directed for provision of facilities in four shelter homes that would accommodate 430 homeless people. He announced that shelter homes would be opened for homeless people by December 10 this year.

Mahmood Khan also approved three buses for the transportation of homeless people to these shelter homes from other congested areas of the city. Chief minister further directed to identify a suitable place for working women hostel.

He also inquired about the progress on government directives for rehabilitation of drug addicts and their allocation in wards of major hospitals.

He said that establishment of shelter homes would reflect vision of PM to facilitate homeless people.

Jail visit

Mehmood paid a surprise visit to Peshawar Central jail on Wednesday and inspected various sections of the prison.

He met juvenile male and female prisoners and inquired about problems being faced by the inmates. The prisoners apprised the CM about non-availability of certain basic amenities in jail.

The CM directed the jail administration to make proper arrangements for the prisoners meeting with their visitors. He expressed dissatisfaction over the cleanliness condition in the jail. He was taken round to hospital canteen, library store rooms, waiting rooms and kitchen of the prison and directed the jail authorities to observe human rights.

He also assured to provide legal assistance to the deserving and needy prisoners in the courts.
