Four doctors held responsible for death of newborn

Father says his wife was refused admission and treatment

DERA GHAZI KHAN: A newborn died soon after the mother was forced to give birth on the grounds of the Teaching Hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan.

The woman’s husband, Bilal, a resident of Siddiqabad Colony, told Express News that he brought his pregnant wife Rani Bibi for delivery to the hospital.



However, he could not get her admitted to the health facility. He added that doctors told him that they had to operate on the woman and he should bring her for delivery the next day. “As my wife was in labour, I had no other option but to lay her on the hospital ground,” he recalled.

Bilal pointed out that his wife lay on the ground and awaited medical help in excruciating pain. However, he said when he did not get any medical help, his wife delivered the baby on the ground.

The newborn died soon after birth. After the incident, the relatives of the woman protested against the hospital administration and demanded action against the doctors responsible for the death. They claimed that the responsibility for the incident lies with the hospital administration. Later, Civil Lines police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Meanwhile, Teaching Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Shahid took notice of the incident and formed an inquiry committee, under the supervision of Dr Khalid Tehseen, to probe the matter.



The committee, in its report, held four doctors and four nurses responsible for the incident. The report stated that Dr Samina Sattar, Dr Tayyab Kausar, Dr Sana Khalid, Dr Sana Tehreem, nurses Tehmina Nawaz, Tehmina Mushtaq, Saira Khan, Javeria and Huma Bibi were found negligent in discharging their duties.

The inquiry report highlighted that the mentioned staff misbehaved with the woman’s family and failed to provide timely medical aid.
