Oxfam Pakistan is investigating the way some of its “new partners in humanitarian response” spent $28.6 million on flood response.
Programme Manager Dr Noreen Khalid declined to name the groups but said that the investigation is being carried out against some national NGOs after financial irregularities kept cropping up during routine monitoring by the British charity. “As the investigation is not yet complete we cannot disclose many details but we do plan to make the findings public,” she said.
To ensure transparency, Oxfam Pakistan outsourced the investigation. It is expected to take four weeks. Till that, and depending on its findings, Oxfam Pakistan has suspended all activities with the NGOs in question and channelled its resources through other avenues.
The money constitutes less than two per cent of the total amount Oxfam has spent on flood relief.
