Top court instructs anti-graft watchdog to submit report within a month

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has asked the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to respond to a questionnaire prepared by the United Kingdom's Home Office regarding the return of former finance minister Ishaq Dar to the country to face a case of assets beyond means.

Dar was declared absconder by an accountability court last year for his failure to appear before it, arguing that he was undergoing medical treatment in London.



During the hearing, Additional Attorney General (AAG) Nayar Rizvi told the three-judge bench of the top court that the United Kingdom’s Home Department had sent a questionnaire regarding Dar’s return.

The AAG said that the questionnaire had been forwarded to NAB which would submit its response to the UK High Commission.

Heading the bench, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar remarked that Dar had stated that he would return to the country once justice was served.



The court instructed NAB to send its answers to the British High Commission and submit a report to the bench within one month. The hearing was adjourned for a month.

Meanwhile, the same bench held in-camera proceedings regarding the extradition of former ambassador Hussain Haqqani from the United States.

Amar Bilal Sufi, an amicus in the matter, stated that there was some progress on the issue of Haqqani’s extradition but it could not be revealed openly.

The bench accepted his request and conducted hearing in camber in the evening.
