Book on literary work of Amjad Islam Amjad launched

Poet’s literary work was celebrated on paper and adapted into on-screen dramas

A book on rich literary contribution of renowned poet and writer Amjad Islam Amjad was launched in Islamabad on Tuesday at a ceremony held at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU).

Those who spoke on the 544-page acclaimed book, titled ‘Amjad Fahmi’ included eminent poet Prof Anwar Masood and its Canada-based Pakistani writer Dr Syed Taqi Abedi.

Amjad Islam Amjad who was also present on the occasion hoped that the book will serve as precious document for doing academic research work on Urdu Adab and literature.

The speakers heaped praise on Amjad for his visionary writing which he projected through his poems, dramas and newspaper columns.

The book, they noted narrated various aspects of his writing and poetry that will remain a source of inspiration for the new generation to a have better life. The nation, they said should be proud of their national heroes, who through their positive and constructive thoughts and writing enlightened the young generation to follow the right path.

Amjad, they added is known for his unique style of poetry which deals with the life of a common man and cause of humanity. Through his writings, he motivated the children and youth to follow human values and practice the same in day-to-day life.

The function was arranged by the University’s Department of Iqbal Studies. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the speakers were presented University’s shields.

Jaun Elia – popular but not great

It may be mentioned here that Amjad Islam Amjad is among Pakistan’s best-known Urdu poets. Born on August 4, 1944, he enjoys immense popularity among Urdu lovers because of his brilliant poetry and excellent screenplays.

Winner of many awards, including the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, and an author of many books of poetry, he has been a regular feature at poetry readings all over the world for the last four decades.

Some of his plays, dramatised by Pakistan Television (PTV) and other private television channels, have won international acclaim. “Waaris,” “Samandar,” “Waqt,” “Dehleez,” “Raat” and “Apne Log” are among his most popular screenplays.
