SC seeks ECP's reply for de-registering Aam Log Party

Justice (retd) Wajih says country does not have an institution that keeps a check on politicians, political parties

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a reply from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) pertaining to cancellation of Aam Log Party's (ALP) registration.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Aijaz ul Ahsan issued a notice to the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) regarding the case on the request submitted by ALP chief Justice (retd) Wajihuddin.

During the hearing, ALP chief apprised the court about how the country does not have an institution that keeps a check on politicians and political parties. "Article 17 of the Constitution conflicts with Section 202 of the Election Act.”



He alleged that honest people are not allowed to enter politics as dishonesty prevails and is rampant throughout this art. "Restrictions placed on submitting a list of 2000 workers within 30 days is a violation of the Constitution."

The petitioner further remarked that civil judges can write better instructions than ECP. "Politics is the dirtiest art of the country and it is being made worse."

"Whatever he said holds weightage," said Justice Ahsan concurring to ALP chief's arguments. "Key points were raised to explain the key point of the election act."

Hearing was adjourned till Dec 3.

It is pertinent to note that the ECP cancelled ALP's registration because it did not meet the rules and regulations as mentioned in the election act.
