VEHARI: City Police Vehari arrested a man for allegedly raping and injuring a four-year-old girl on Saturday.

Police said that G* belonged to a nomadic family. She was playing outside her hut when 60-year-old Ghulam Fareed persuaded her to come along with him by offering her sweets. The child was found by residents who contacted police and rescue workers and shifted her to DHQ hospital, Vehari.

Residents said that Fareed had come to town a few days ago and was living under the railway station platform. Rescue officials revealed that the child was in critical condition because of severe blood loss and had sustained serious injuries.

The girl’s grandmother said that the child lives in Faisalabad and had come for a visit. “She only came here for two days and was ready to leave when the beast took her away,” she said. The child’s family demanded that the suspect be given strict punishment.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, City Police Station SHO Rana Muhammad Akram said that a case has been registered and the suspect has been shifted to Danewal police station. He maintained that initial investigations suggest that the suspect has been involved in several cases of child rape and violence. He said that the suspect had been set free on previous occasions because he had pretended to be mentally handicapped. He said that further investigations were underway and strict punishment will be given to the suspect.
