Kirsten confirmed as South Africa’s coach

JOHANNESBURG:

Gary Kirsten, who guided India to the World Cup title, was named coach of his native South Africa.

The former opener will have the title of head coach and team director while he will be assisted by ex-fast-bowler Allan Donald and Russell Domingo.

Kirsten succeeds Corrie van Zyl, whose caretaker role came to an end when New Zealand shocked South Africa in the World Cup. His first challenges will be a home series against Australia from October. Sri Lanka are also scheduled to play later this year.

A Cricket South Africa media conference also announced AB de Villiers will become the limited-overs captain, while Graeme Smith continues as Test captain. Kirsten expressed his eagerness to coach South Africa ahead of his appointment.

“I would love to coach South Africa,” he said. “I would consider it an honour.”
