Art exhibition: ‘Medical students can be creative too’

Photographs and paintings of the KEMU campus displayed.

LAHORE:

“Medical students don’t lack creativity,” King Edward Arts and Photography Society president Tausif Umer said on Saturday.

Umer was speaking at the 7th All Pakistan Arts and Photography Exhibition at the King Edward Medical University (KEMU). He said it took him more than two months to collect paintings and photographs from students of the 18 participating universities, including medical colleges and art schools.

Besides floral arrangements, sketches and handicrafts, a number of photographs and paintings of the KEMU campus were displayed at the exhibition.

Cartoonist Javed Iqbal was one of the judges at the exhibition. “The works are refreshing. You can’t tell that they’re made by medical students unless you have been told so,” he said. He hoped that such exhibitions would be arranged in future as well.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Iqbal and Special Secretary Waseem Akhtar were the chief guests at the occasion.

Rana Iqbal said that the medical students had put up a good show.

Akhtar said he was surprised that medical students had managed to take time out from their rigorous routine. He said more extra-curricular activities must be organised for medical students.

Iqbal and Akhtar later distributed certificates and shields among the participants in 20 different categories.

Shumaila Aslam of the National College of Arts won the award for calligraphy and Aatikah and Sumaira Munir Ahmed of the Allama Iqbal Medical College for painting and floral designs, respectively. Zunaira, Abdullah and Qasim Khan of the KEMU won awards for sketches, photography and handicrafts, respectively. The photo essay competition was won by Noor Qamar from the University of Gujrat.

Students of Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJMC), Punjab University (PU) and the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) also participated in the exhibition.
