Religious scholars urge interfaith harmony as Ashura nears

Shia, Sunni leaders join hands to foster love and peace

QUETTA: As Ashura (Muharram 10) nears, religious scholars from both the Shia and Sunni sects have urged the people of Balochistan to promote interfaith harmony in order to foster love and peace and defeat conspiracies of the enemies.

This was stated by Balochistan Shia Conference President Syed Dawood Agha, Maulana Qari Abdul Rehman, Allama Jumma Asadi, Maulana Abdul Quddus Sasoli, Allama Hashim Mosvi, Maulana Dr Attaur Rehman and other religious scholars while addressing a joint press conference at the Quetta Press Club on Sunday.



The Shia and Sunni leaders said, “The new Islamic year begins with Muharramul Haram so that we can remember that sacrifices were rendered by the martyrs of the battle of Karbala to protect Islam.”
They said Imam Hussain and his followers sacrificed their lives in order to protect the religion of their grandfather Muhammad (PBUH).

Stressing upon interfaith harmony, they said, “The people of Quetta should unite against all enemies attempting to fuel sectarian hatred.”
On a joint decision of both the sects for Friday prayers during the Ashura procession in Quetta, they said, “After developing a consensus, we have yielded a joint solution. Friday prayers will be held at all mosques in the routes of the processions.

“The Quetta police has asked all imams of mosques to hold Friday prayers till 1:30pm and the mosques will be opened for all.”
