PU vice chancellor says education must become country’s top priority

LAHORE: A prize distribution ceremony for BA/BSc Part-II annual examination position holders was held at Punjab University (PU) on Monday.

Punjab University Vice Chancellor Niaz Ahmed, Acting Controller of Examinations Abdul Rauf, Additional Controller Raja Shahid Javed, senior faculty members, students and their parents were present on the occasion.

Addressing the ceremony, PU Vice-Chancellor said that no nation can prosper without giving importance to education. “Education must become our first priority; without it we have no future,” he stressed.

The varsity’s administration aims to produce quality graduates. To achieve this, we are making efforts to bring our academic programmes at par with international programmes, he added.

Over 60% of students fail BA, BSc examinations

The vice chancellor also congratulated position holders, their parents and teachers on the achievements. He also announced scholarships for those position holders who wished to study at PU.

He also announced Rs 0.5 million honorarium for the department of examinations staff and Rs 0.1 million for monitoring teams due to their outstanding performance.

Acting Controller of Examinations Rauf Nawaz said that the department caters to approximately 545,000 candidates who appear for the test every year. The examinations are conducted in five divisions across Punjab including Gilgit, Skardu and Quetta.

PU students make varsity proud

A total of 224,143 candidates appeared for the in BA/BSc Annual Examination 2018, out of which 99,366 passed the test. The overall pass percentage was calculated at 44.33%.

Breaking it down, 131,815 candidates sat for the BA/BSc Annual Examination Part-I 2018, while only 51,980 passed. The total pass percentage was calculated to be 39.43%. On the other hand, 84,266 candidates appeared for the BA/BSc Annual Examination Part-II 2018 out of which 43,767 passed, bringing the percentage to 51.94.
