The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has called on data-producing agencies to provide credible figures and win the confidence of the people as stakeholders are interested in reliable and timely data with comprehensive coverage.
Speaking at a seminar on “Contributions and achievements of official statistics,” organised by the SBP at the National Institute of Banking and Finance (Nibaf) in Islamabad on Tuesday, SBP’s Deputy Governor Muhammad Kamran Shehzad said an efficient and up-to-date statistical system was of paramount importance for providing reliable statistics required for formulation and implementation of policies. “Reliable and efficient statistics are the basic ingredients for carving out effective monetary and macroeconomic policies,” he said.
“Official statistics play a significant role in understanding economic conditions and are vital for the formulation of policies for development,” he said.
Shehzad said the SBP compiled and disseminated timely and reliable statistics on economic, financial and monetary aspects most pertinent to the central bank.
Secretary Statistics Division Asif Bajwa, on the occasion, said soon there would be a professional and autonomous Pakistan Bureau of Statistics that would increase the credibility of data.
