Majority of Pakistanis want government to Islamise society: Gallup Poll

Gallup poll reveals 67% Pakistanis want government to take steps to Islamise society.

A majority of Pakistanis want the government to take steps for the Islamisation of society, revealed a recently released Gilani Poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan.

In a survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question:

In your opinion should government take steps to ‘Islamise’ the society?

The results of the poll revealed that 67% of Pakistanis want the government to take steps to Islamise society, 13% responded by saying Pakistan did not need Islamisation and 20% gave no response.

Those who responded with a yes were asked a follow up question:

Should government take steps for Islamisation at once or one by one?

Forty eight per cent said the government should take the steps ‘one by one’ and 31% said the steps should be taken at once, while 21% gave no response.

The survey was carried out among a sample of 2,738 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during January 2011.

Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.

Whatever is there in Quran, we must make it law & follow; The two major sects, Shias & Sunnis sat together in Zia era and did constitute a document comprising of commonalities among both sects, for implementation as law; the scholars say that the document still exists, so no new home-work required. So, its not difficult, except for Hyppocrites, only if we are beleivers, to implement and become the leaders of the only divine religion in its original shape & teachings. Anybody doing this will find best of everything in this world & also in Jannah, InshAllah!

Nirvan | 13 years ago | Reply Who were polled. Rural, urban, educated, illiterate. The Pakistanis I know are secular, like the average Indian. If you want to live like a very poor Saudi or Iranian etc, please vote YES, because you will be living under sharia law. Women cannot drive, school, can be stoned, an eye for an eye, and all the men will look alike in unkempt beards, carry worry beads, but fight their sunni or shia or ahmedhi brotheren if the bring up the walls of intolerance. Even the Chinese will depart. Your country is crumbling economically and educationally bankrupt and the jihadis are delivering death blows every day and with decreased aid, and exports, the country that Jinnah (whiskey drinking and westernized) so misguidedly founded will finally fail, all from within.

Once the true representatives reach the corridors of power then this opinion will be reflected in their legislation and actions. I think it's futile to get into this debate at this point, it'll create more divisions which we do not need. This government doesn't have the moral authority to achieve anything much less "Islamic" reforms.

gunjan | 13 years ago | Reply Does a nationalist Indian's vote count? I strongly support a more islamic Pakistan. That is the path to "sure" salvation for Pakistanis and none else. The shortcut road will directly go to heaven for many. May God fulfill your desire as soon as possible... I can't think of anything else that can benefit India most in the long run.

What we really need is - to practice Islam in the true spirit of it - Not laws, regulations, rituals but practicing the true spirit of Islam. Sorry to say, that it is very evidently missing to a great extent. Corruption, theft, insincerity, not telling the truth, no work ethics, deceiving - the list can go on. So called non muslim countries practice the teachings of Islam and we just give lectures and practice nothing good.

Lalani | 13 years ago | Reply Irrespective of the authenticity of the research, this is a very alarming and disappointing trend. If the research is not representative, then someone is planting such news for a myopic purpose, and its time, media and everyone should raise their guards against such infiltration. And if the research is indeed correct and representing the views, then the thinking and trend enforced upon people of Pakistan is a cause of even greater alarm. Pakistan needs to become secular and liberal--not conservative and dogmatic.

nagesh rao | 13 years ago | Reply hi, brothers, it was interesting to read all ur comments, it seems to be a common tool used by politicians in all countries to evoke religion to divert focus from the basic social issues which the governments have failed badly in, here in india too its not much different, the only positive about india is that people are religious but in their own personal way, and religion hasnt been allowed to play a major role in politics, my personal opinion is religion should be strictly a matter of personal faith, and talking about sins and wrong doings, i think the creator(god) is strong enough to judge and punish people for their deeds .....

Some gall! After losing half the country to chauvinism, and having lost three decades of development to fundamentalists, loss of face around the globe ... we are not a radicalised country. He spells out his Islamist goals and the religious authority supporting them pretty clearly. I've yet to hear a persuasive rebuttal to his interpretation of his religious duty. Is this what 67% of Pakistanis support? Makes one shudder.

Arvind | 13 years ago | Reply Pakistan is heading towards disaster, first sign its people have lost wisdom. If Islamic system replaces democracy, it will be a bigger version of Taliban. Problem is that you talk about Islam but dont follow it complete. Where Islam says take bribe, why still prostitution is in Pakistan, why people go to them? Why leaders dont care about public and fight each other? Why public officers are corrupt? Are they not muslims? if you apply true Islam they are not muslims at all but no one objects them. This is the point you should care if your muslims Islamization of society and govt will not mean that mentality of people will change. It will still remain same and that will lead to worst fightings among leaders, increased corruption in public among them, they will not be responsible to public anymore.It will become another Somalia and given the nukes, will be a total disaster for world. The day it happens America, NATO will attack Pakistan and take all nukes away. With changing time you need to change, religions was the concept to hold people together in older times when science was not known. I dont say give up religion, but dont be too rigid to adopt changes. Make Pakistan secular, end supporting terrorists and you will see Pak GDP touching 10+ %. Or if you want Islamic system then first clean the dirt of society make everyone follow true Islam.

There is general defamation campaign to ridicule Islam using these fake organizations. It is important people see their vile motives. Suicide bombing constitute as a unlawful warfare and punishment for this crime is very severe mentioned in Quran and there is no differing opinions among various Islamic schools. This technique is not new, those who like to learn from history should consider the bombing in Europe supposed to be carried out by Communists but later turned out to be NATO terrorists and the operation was called Operation Gladio. It is important people identify hate speeches open and subtle ones and refrain from being on the wrong side of oppression.

Why do they not make Hizb e Tahrir, the foremost proponent of a Capliphate, the biggest demand? The people want democracy, social conservatism, piety and their problems solved. They will never say anything against Islam (why should they?) but they also won't vote for the parties that espouse it most vociferously. They know that these people, if they come in power, will make their lives measurably worse. They know that all the Islamicisation that has already occurred has only created more hardship, intolerance and chaos rather than solved their problems. This poll tells us nothing about what people really think other than some vaguely expressed sentiments.

Its like taking opinion of a trader on "more investment in the trade segment", of course he'll say yes. I believe it shouldn't be a one liner survey, we need to first explain what can an Islamic system offers? How is it going to cope with exponentially growing globalization? How is it going to effect an individual and so many things like this? I am sure if this would have part of this survey the result must have been different.

jib | 13 years ago | Reply Seems like most of the 13% people who are against the notion have ended up commenting here...i wonder why people fear an Islamic society so much..i would like to mention some points: 1. Islamising means establishment of an islamic state where islamic laws are enforced. A muslim population in majority does not necessarily islamise the state, enforcement of sharia law does. The taliban regime is not the perfect example of sharia law implementation. The taliban version of islamic state was not 100% correct. What else do you expect from a nation suffering from decades of war, where most of the children were orphans, literacy rate was lowest and crime rate was highest. They would have evolved with time, had we given them some. Taliban style enforcement of shariah law cannot be practical in Pakistan for obvious reasons but their resolve to implement sharia is praiseworthy. It is compulsory for a muslim to believe in sharia law as the best law for governance on earth.What good is the belief in Allah when you believe in the creator but doubt His laws?There can be difference of opinion on the method of sharia implementation and few debatable legislations which require discussions of the intellectuals. For all the people who rant about democracy. Isnt is hypocrisy that you are against the popular wish of the majority of the population?

And which should be the dominant view: Sunni, Shia or Wahabism? And while I personally have nothing against Islam as a religion I have a bone to pick with those who make calls to Islamize society: you people are the loudest to stand up for Islamic causes all over the world and to impose your views on others, unwarranted or not, but what about following the basic principles of religion (such as mercy, kindness, tolerance or forgiveness) yourselves?

Govt at the top is tainted. Judiciary cant provide them justice. Inflation is out of control, law and order situation is worse than ever.. so they see hope in an islamic system - an idealistic scenario which would solve their problems cuz the current lot of leaders and politicians are not capable of doing so.

If they board plane A, they will land in USA and be given a greencard on arrival. Those boarding the plane B will land in the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan under the rule of Taleban. I wonder what the outcome will be - all emotions apart.

Last time I looked,even the oil rich Saudis are having a hard time with that type of bull. Who's version of Islam is to be impossed upon us all now? As we know , very few follow the ONLY constant and true source of Islam according to Allah, with no distortions or added opinions and sect interpretations (in case your confused....that would be the Quran). Allah is very clear on how to do everything that one needs guidance on. I mean, if they are going to make everyone follow the ACTUAL islam as taught to us by Allah, that would be a WONDERFUL thing..... No more lying, cheating, stealing etc.....but somehow....I have a feeling the version of distorted islam....(make women wear black bed sheets in 120 degree weather and no driving for them etc) is the version they are talking about imposing. Pretty sad....seems Pakistan thinks that keeping everyone even more repressed is the solution instead of enlightening and education people and opening their minds creating the ability of critcal thinking skills. haseeb khan | 13 years ago | Reply islam means justice for all , ruled and ruler, rich and poor, muslims and non muslims. non muslims should be ruled by thier laws, as wrtten in thier books; excuding SATI(Burning widows on the pyres of husbands), killing new born girls, or getting female foetses aborted.There is very little differance between the laws as written in the Quran, bible, and taurat.Islam places FORGIVENESS as one thing which earns rewards from Godaccording to islamic teachings women should not show thier hair to outsiders ( Non mahram). Few years ago I was in the Uk,in a locality which had high concentration of jews. I was surprised to know then taht thier women are also ordered to keep thier hair safe from the gaze of outsiders etc. Good practicing Jewish women to my surprise get thier hair shaved after thier marriage and have to wear wig... we have to respect each others reigion and belief. God would surely punish the wrong doers.We, ordinary humans are not supposed to punish our erring fellows.

If you want to be a true muslim, its not hard to be true muslim in Pakistan. We just do not want ourselves to implement islam in our practical lives. Start from your our own home. Stop music, say prayers, recire quran, understand quran and hadis, tolerate the difference of opinion in case of religion especially, and in life in general, be patient, remember death, stop comparing ourselves with others, be dutiful and merciful as well. Be simple, stop following the fashion madly, keep urself clean. These simple things can bring revolution in ur private as well as collective lives. Let the society mature first and then decide itself where it wants to go

The state has failed to provide the most basic necessities of life to its people. The desperate population is a dire need of change, the closest change they can visualizes is to switch over to the Islamic system not because they love it but because they do,t know other system of governance.
