LAHORE: An additional district and sessions judge has ordered singer Meesha Shafi’s counsel to submit a reply in a defamation suit filed by renowned singer-turned-actor Ali Zafar. The latter is seeking Rs1 billion in damages on the grounds that the sexual harassment claims by Meesha Shafi against him are false.

On Monday, Shafi’s counsel submitted the power of attorney before the court and sought further adjournment of proceedings so as to have a chance to properly read the plea. The judge accepted and adjourned the case with orders to submit a reply in the suit.

In earlier proceedings, the counsel for Zafar told the court that singer  Shafi defamed his client through baseless allegations. He asked that the defendant be ordered to apologise to his client and that a fine of Rs1 billion be imposed on her for leveling baseless allegations. In his break-up of the damages, the lawyer said the singer should be made to pay Rs20 million for mental anguish, Rs80 million for loss of contracts, Rs400 million for loss of business opportunities and Rs500 million for damage to reputation.

Zafar sent a legal notice to Shafi, stating that her tweets from April 19, 2018, were slanderous and defamatory. He said they have caused tremendous damage to his reputation, goodwill and livelihood. The Teefa In Trouble star also said that Shafi had launched the malicious attack to tarnish his image through false accusations.

I don’t know who is wrong or right but i’m damn sure that a girl never talk about such things. There is must be something behind her statement. I prefer to promote her statement instead of pushing her down because there is not smoke without fire. I’m in favor of Meesha ShafiRecommend

we kept asking for when the media and entertainment industry would wake up and expose the harassers among them. Again, it took a woman to do it. After #MeeshaShafi’ s revelation more women will find the courage to break the silence. Recommend

No woman will raise false charges of sexual harassment unless there is a reason. This is because women value their self-respect much more than men. This again shows how male dominated society still, so being born in this male dominated society is like undergoing life imprisonment for a woman.Recommend
