SHC pushes for moving City Courts Complex

Court’s development committee finds central prison site to be most suitable.

KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court administration branch has written to the government, conveying the SHC development committee’s wish to instantly acquire land for the relocation of the City Courts Complex.

The letter was addressed to the Sindh Advocate General, the Sindh Prosecutor General, the provincial chief secretary and the law secretary, among others.

The administration branch sent an observation made by the committee which said that it hoped and expected the government to make viable efforts. The SHC development committee once again noted that after an extensive survey and consideration of financial implications, it has found the Central Prison, Karachi site “the most suitable place for the reconstruction of the judicial complex”.

The government was also reminded of the proposal that the land of the present City Courts Complex could be reacquired and sold by the Sindh government. The construction of the new building could be met with the money from the sale, saving the government from spending its own capital.

The relocation would also benefit litigants, lawyers, judicial officers for being at the centre of the city and less traffic congestion, the development committee observed.

Considering the law and order situation and the terrorist threat, it said the City Courts Complex is extremely vulnerable at the moment.
