Pakistan moves towards its first ‘weaving city’

MoU signed to establish sector in Faisalabad

Pakistan's first weaving city will be set up in the M3 Industrial Estate in Faisalabad as the country moves towards organising its textile sector and brings together the cluster of units across 100 acres of land.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked between the Faisalabad Industrial Estate Development and Management Company (FIEDMC) and All Pakistan Cotton Power looms Association (APCPA) at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) on Friday.

Mian Adrees, the FIEDMC chairman, CEO Amir Saleemi, and members of the FCCI were present during this ceremony .

The development will see FIEDMC lease out pre-fabricated sheds to the power looms sector so that funds are focused on investment in technology and up-gradation and not on infrastructure development.

FCCI President Shabbir Hussain Chawla added that better technology would help the power looms sector come out of its crisis and produce high quality clothes. This, he said, would attract international buyers and increase Pakistan's exports.



Representing APCPA, Chaudhary Muhammad Nawaz said that efforts were being made for the proposed weaving city for several years.

He also said another 1,000 acres of land should be allotted for the extension phase of the M3 Industrial Estate.



Amir Saleemi, the CEO of FIEDMC, said the smaller units of the weaving city would be established on the bypasses of important roads leading to Faisalabad. "They will provide jobs to the local workers. The weaving city will be developed on the public-private partnership model."
