KARACHI:

The Karachi Tajir Ittehad has announced that they will stage a series of sit-ins to protest the power crisis currently engulfing the industrial hub of the country.

The decision was taken on Wednesday by members of the association in an emergency meeting held presided over by Tajir Ittehad Chairman Atiq Mir.

The first sit-in would be staged on May 27 in the timber market, where most of the areas have been without power for the last three weeks.

Traders also sought compensation “for the loss of Rs30 billion they suffered due to prolonged power outages in May.” They threatened that if their demand was not met, the loss would be recovered by taking illegal power connections.

In the next stage of protest, representatives of market associations across the city will stage a sit-in in Gizri and stop payment of power bills.
