RAWALPINDI:

A district magistrate on Tuesday sentenced a man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for carrying explosives and illegal weapons.

Magistrate Mehr Muhammad Sarfaraz convicted Abdul Qadir, a resident of a village in Rawalpindi, for carrying a suicide vest, hand grenades and a 30-bore pistol with 50 live bullets.

The court handed down seven years rigorous imprisonment to the convict for carrying explosives and three years jail term for carrying illegal weapons. The magistrate also ordered forfeiture of the convict’s property and imposition of a fine of Rs20,000.

Rizwan Abdul Qadir and two others are also being tried for their hand in the suicide attack at a public place near Pirwadhai Mor, Peshawar Road, on March 16, 2009.

The convict was arrested by the Westridge police on June 16, 2009.

Qadir and Qari Sanaullah Abbasi are being prosecuted by an anti-terrorism court for allegedly facilitating the suicide bomber who exploded himself near Peshawar Mor, killing 14 people.

The investigators further alleged that the two accused were busy planning to carry out more such attacks in the twin cities of Islamabad-rawalpindi to avenge the operation at Lal Masjid.
