BETHESDA: Japanese teen golf star Ryo Ishikawa and six others booked their place in next month’s US Open championship thanks to results and rankings.

A total of 73 players are exempt from qualifying for the field of 156 who will tee off in the next major golf tournament on June 16-19 at Congressional Country Club.

Ishikawa lost a playoff in Japan but advanced four spots in the rankings to stand 49th on Monday, cracking the top 50 to earn the exemption. Italy’s 18-year-old Matteo Manassero, ranked 36th, secured his place in his first US Open while Sweden’s Peter Hanson, ranked 50th, also booked his spot at the US Open by virtue of his ranking.
