With honour: Lt Yasir Abbas laid to rest

Abbas has been buried at the Cavalry Grounds graveyard with full military honours.

LAHORE: The funeral of Pakistan Navy Lieutenant Yasir Abbas who was martyred in the terrorist attack on PNS Mehran in Karachi, has been offered in Lahore, Tuesday.

Abbas was among the first to encounter the terrorists raiding the base. Interior minister Rehman Malik said Abbas' brave efforts saved lives and vital military assets in the operation.

Governor Punjab Latif Khosa, Lahore Corps Commander Lieutenant General Rashid mehmood, Navy Station Commander Akbar Naqi and Deputy Speaker of Punjab Assembly Rana Mash-hud attended the funeral prayers.

Abbas' body arrived in Lahore on Monday night on a C-130 aircraft, and was later shifted to the hospital.

Defence Secretary Azhar Ali Khan and Former D-G Rangers Yaqoob Ali Khan handed over Abbas' body to his father, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Jaffar Abbas.

Abbas has been buried at the Cavalry Grounds graveyard with full military honours.

Online, dozens of Facebook pages have been created to honour Abbas' valour in the line of duty.

SIMPLIFY | 13 years ago | Reply I completely agree with what Patriotic has written. It is very easy for us to criticise sitting behind a computer. It was these brave soldiers who fought a hard battle and protected us from the enemy. Not many have the guts to do that these days. Not many even have the spine to stay in Pakistan- most upper class people plan on settling abroad. I salute the bravery of these young soldiers! Something is right if Pakistan is still producing heroes like Yaser. May Allah make all Pakistanis so brave!

Why Nishan-e-Haider is only for forces, why not for civilians, police, politicians, etc. I have really respect for this brave man but there lot who are died in dark sites and no body know them. Forces are dominating so they materialize their such events. I hope all will agree.

Yaseer Abbas, indeed shahadat is a great honor for a momin but it is extremely sad that we're losing such brilliant guys because of our hypocritical policies of supporting Afghan/Kashmir Jihad. We still have black sheep in Govt., Army and establishment who're providing a helping hand for such barbaric militants. Please tell him not to come to Pakistan as you already damaged Army and People of Pakistan by selling them to US. CIA Raw and Moosad seems having party in Pakistan. Such young and energetic officers being killed not in battle field but fighting millitants inside. We should seriously analyse security arrangements in our country as Army was exposed recently as an ill prepared force. Comprehensive study of security arrangements needed as we are still living in stone age.

Badshah | 13 years ago | Reply Pakistani government is likely to announce Tamgha-e-Basalat for Shaheed lt. Yaser Abbas, it would be absolutely digusting and preposterous if that happened! Tamgha-e-Basalat is the second highest award for Excellence & Courage (operations other than war) after Sitara-e-Basalat. Are not we at war with terrorists! Do we still need to inform our generals that we are at war with the enemies of Pakistan!!! Then why an award which is given for operations other than war? On the other hand the Nishan-i-Haider is the highest military award given by Pakistan. It is awarded "to those who have performed acts of greatest heroism or most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger and have shown bravery of the highest order or devotion to the country, in the presence of the enemy on land, at sea or in the air! If the attackers on PNS Mehran were not thieves, robbers or dacoits then who were they! Were not they enemies of Pakistan! Our generals and leaders are still reluctant to recognise the attackers on PNS Mehran as enemies of Pakistan, therefore, they are also reluctant in announcing Nishan-e-Haider for Lt. Yaser! Or they simply want to keep Pakistan Navy deprived of "Nishan-e-Haider"!!

When I saw the photograph of Yasir, I recalled the above song by Madam Noor Jahan. This young soldier of Pakistan and thousands of others have sacrificed their lives on the so called 'War against Terrorism". Will anybody will point it out why this war was started? Is any of our leaders responsible for a blunder resulting thousands of these young Shaheeds? Are we fighting our war? We the people of Pakistan are not ready to sacrifice our 'Putters' any more.
