Ahsan Iqbal tenders unconditional apology in contempt case

Case adjourned by court till July 2

LAHORE: Former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal on Friday tendered an unconditional apology in the Lahore High Court (LHC) during the hearing of a contempt case lodged against the PML-N leader.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Mazhar Ali Akbar Naqvi resumed the hearing of the case.

"Your detailed answer does not contain the words required for an apology," remarked Justice Naqvi as he addressed Iqbal.

"I respect the judiciary. I apologise to the court unconditionally," the former minister replied.



The court adjourned the hearing till July 2 and demanded an answer from from the PML-N leader. The petitioner had alleged that Iqbal gave a statement against the judiciary and the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) and used derogatory words against the judiciary.

Last week the LHC had adjourned the hearing of the same case against for a week after Iqbal submitted a plea seeking exemption from appearing before the court due to his electioneering commitments.

Iqbal’s counsel had requested the bench to adjourn the case till the end of elections, which is scheduled to be held on July 25.
