Tehreek-e-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYR) leader Maulana Ashraf Asif Jalali was declared ineligible to contest upcoming general elections in accordance with article 62 and 63 of the Constitution on Wednesday.

Hearing an appeal against the approval of Jalali's nomination papers for NA-81 Gujranwala constituency, the appellate tribunal of Lahore High Court termed the returning officer's decision as null and void, Express News reported.

The petitioner, who is a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate, stated that Jalali did not highlight any tax returns in his nomination papers.

TLYR to contest elections to ‘Islamise’ country

Signatures of the approver and the suggester were also missing from his nomination papers and despite Supreme Court orders, Jalali failed to submit his passport to scrutinise his foreign travels.

Earlier this year, Jalali led TLYR said it will participate in next month's general elections with full force in a bid to 'promote Islam' in the country.
