Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has clarified that he will indeed remain part of mainstream politics and has only stepped down from the chairmanship of All Pakistan Muslim League, in a video message earlier on Saturday.

The statement comes a day after he resigned from the party chairman’s post fuelling speculation that his political stint was also over.

“I have resigned from the post after considerable legal advice but have no plans of quitting politics”, said Musharraf adding that Dr Mohammad Amjad is the new chairman and Mehreen Malik would serve as secretary-general. He also urged party workers to fully support the new leadership while he himself would remain a part of APML as its supremo.

‘Not a coward’ Musharraf changed plans for return after SC order

Moreover, in his video message, the APML supremo also said that if Khawaja Asif’s lifetime ban could be reversed then why not his. “If Nawaz Sharif has the freedom to travel in and out of the country then why am I not allowed to do so”, he questioned.

Earlier this week the Supreme Court of Pakistan had overruled its decision of allowing Musharraf to contest the general elections on a conditional permission after the former ruler failed to appear in court. The top court then ordered for him to be arrested prompting the retired army chief to abandon his plans of returning to Pakistan.
