MMA set to hold power show today

Alliance says this will be biggest rally in city’s history

LAHORE: Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) is all set to hold its power show at the iconic Minar-e-Pakistan on Sunday (today). MMA Secretary General Liaqat Baloch claims it will be the biggest ever public gathering in the history of the city.

Speaking in a news conference after inspecting arrangements on Saturday, Baloch said MMA neither has deep pockets nor feudal lords on its side. “Contrary to looters of the public exchequer, the alliance has limited resources. Our major strength is our people who believe in the teachings of Islam and love the Prophet (SAW),” he added.

The MMA leader highlighted that political parties spent billions of rupees on elections and violate the code of conduct laid down by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Besides drafting elections rules, he underlined, it is also the responsibility of the commission to implement those regulations.

Baloch demanded the ECP and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) take notice of exorbitant spending on electioneering by different political parties.

He indicated that the MMA is ready to contest 2018 general on the election symbol of the book. The MMA secretary general said the country is at the crossroads and there was great uncertainty among the masses.

“None of the past rulers had fulfilled their commitments to the people nor implemented their election manifestoes, due to which the general public was disappointed. There is an ugly situation of conflict between politics and states. However, the Sunday’s public gathering will bring balance in national politics.” Baloch highlighted that the alliance will announce its election strategy, schedule of nationwide public rallies and public contact campaign during the holy month.

He welcomed the suo motu notice taken by the Chief Justice of Pakistan over the May 12 incident in Karachi and added that all institutions should remain within their limits.
