Media manhandled: SC orders judicial inquiry

The apex court had taken a suo moto notice after journalists protested against murder of colleagues

ISLAMABAD: The apex court Friday ordered a judicial inquiry after journalists, who were marching through the capital to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, were manhandled by the Islamabad Police on Thursday.

During the hearing, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar directed Sessions Judge Sohail Nasir to conduct a judicial inquiry into the incident and submit a report within ten days.

The apex court had taken a suo moto notice after journalists, who were marching to protest the murder of their colleagues in Afghanistan on World Press Freedom Day were stopped by and manhandled by the capital police at Express Chowk on May 3.

Having been summoned, Inspector General Islamabad Police Sultan Azam Temuri and Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Mushtaq Ahmed appeared before the court on Friday.
