Integration of disabled people into society our responsibility, says Senate chairman

Chairman senate urges that parliament and parliament lodges to be made disable-friendly

ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani on Monday said that the integration of disabled people in the society is the responsibility of the state as Pakistan is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons.

The chairman was surprised to learn that the parliament was not disabled-person friendly. The chairman ordered that designated parking spots should be allocated immediately in the parking spaces of the parliament.



He also instructed the secretary Senate that all access points within the parliament and parliament lodges should be made disabled-friendly and instructions in this regard should be forwarded to the relevant government departments.

The world disability report states that 10-12 per cent of the total population of Pakistan is living with some sort of disability, and most of them are deprived of basic rights to education, health and employment.



Sanjrani reiterated that it is our duty to look after and take care of disabled people, and ensuring their integration into the society should be our guiding principle. This is not philanthropy, but our responsibility.
