24th case of crippling virus in Balochistan

National count hits 49 as child infected in Jaffarabad

A new polio case has been confirmed in Balochistan's Jaffarabad district, bringing the province's total cases to 24 this year, while the nationwide count has reached 49.

Health department sources reported that a child in Jaffarabad contracted the virus, though further details on the child's age and gender were not disclosed. Lab tests from a facility in Islamabad confirmed the presence of the virus, marking the latest setback in the ongoing battle against polio.

Balochistan has seen a concerning rise in polio cases, with many reported from Qila Abdullah, Noshki, Pishin, and other areas across the province.

In response, the provincial government has declared a health emergency to combat and eradicate the virus.

Despite extensive vaccination efforts, the virus continues to spread, particularly in areas with vaccination refusals and challenges in reaching remote communities.

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti expressed deep concern over the escalating polio cases in the province, instructing health officials and other departments to intensify their efforts.

"Protecting our children from this crippling virus is a priority," he stated, urging greater collaboration to overcome logistical and social barriers to vaccinations.

The rise in polio cases underscores the urgency of stronger vaccination campaigns, community outreach, and public awareness to protect children and eliminate the virus in the province and across Pakistan.
