Hundreds held in drive against prostitution

Police also bust bootleggers,drug pushers raid sheesha centres

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Police have arrested more than 600 people in their drive against prostitution, illegal liquor and drugs in the capital.

The drive was launched after an Islamabad High Court judge admonished the capital’s police chief for reportedly not doing enough to control crime in the city.

On Tuesday, the police issued a statement stating that as many as 625 people have been arrested for selling drugs and for being involved in ‘immoral activities’.



“Islamabad Police have arrested 322 people for their involvement in immoral activities and 303 drug pushers over the past two months,” the statement read.

Moreover, it said that a massive crackdown had been ordered by Inspector General Sultan Azam Temuri against drug pushers, liquor sellers and those involved in prostitution.

“During the last two months, Islamabad police arrested 168 women and 153 men for their involvement in immoral activities while 303 people were held for their involvement in drug pushing,” police said.



It added that cops had recovered 137.184 kilogrammes of hashish, 17.346 kilogrammes of heroin, 2.5 kilogrammes of opium, 10 tranquilising pills and 719 grammes of crystal methamphetamine (ice) was recovered from them.

Police also arrested 220 bootleggers and recovered 13,257 bottles of liquor from them during this period.

A crackdown was also launched against those involved in running sheesha centres in the capital, arresting as many as 119 people who were booked in 44 first information reports (FIR) against them.
