The Vault: Amna Faizan Quadri

Published: April 21, 2018

Amna Faizan Quadri, an architect by profession, has ventured on to design a collection of bespoke statement cushions. She has transferred her paintings on to fabric along with delicate embroideries and bold applique designs. She shares with us her creative inspiration that brought to life A Room of Our Own (ARO)

How and when did you become interested in designing cushions?

I was finishing a client’s residence interior when she came across a few of my paintings and requested me to convert them into cushions for her living room. She wanted something bright and refreshing, not typical designs that were available in the market. The positive response from there led me to take a plunge into hosting an exhibition last winter, giving birth to A Room Of Our Own.

Share a memorable story with us about a cushion design you made?

I was going through my mother’s sketches from her college days, when I came across a very delicately sketched iris. The intricate design captivated my attention and I knew I just had to include it in my cushion collection. Idyllic iris was thus, inspired from my mother’s original sketch that I had discovered.

Is there any design that you are emotionally attached to and why?

Soaring skies; which shows a falcon in flight, is one of my favorite designs as it depicts freedom and success.

What inspires you and how do you conceive your designs?

I have been painting for the past two years as it is therapeutic for me. That is how I relax after a crazy day of dealing with contractors, client deadlines and the unexpected events that crop up in architecture projects. My designs are not predetermined. They are a product of what comes out on canvas. Since ARO cushions are accent pieces, they do not have to be matching nor are they tied with a particular trend.

Do you wish to expand and create other home accessories too?

Cushions are just the first step for ARO. A Room Of Our Own was conceived with the idea of encompassing all elements that go in putting together a successful interior. The idea is to focus on exclusive quality pieces rather than mass produced home accessories that are currently readily available.

Is there any thing on your radar that you wish to make in the future?

Currently ARO is working towards a new line of fun cushions for the summer. There are some exciting designs that will be revealed in a few months! So, keep a look out for our new summer collection!
