ISLAMABAD: With several awareness campaigns not bearing the desired results, the Islamabad Traffic Police on Monday said that it will adopt a sterner, deterrent approach against two-wheelers violating lane regulations. The public demanded strict action against young motorbikers to stop violating traffic rules on busy roads by using wrong lanes since it threatens the lives of road-users since their violations sometimes lead to lethal accidents, said ITP spokesman. He added that they had forwarded the proposals for heavy fines on violators of traffic rules to the authorities concerned since existing fines do not pose to be enough of a deterrent to stop such lawbreakers. He, however, expressed the hope that the proposition would be approved in the coming days and called it a useful tool to avoid untoward accidents on roads. “Issuing a ticket to violator is not the only solution since there are some western countries who the traffic lawbreakers to jails,” he said. We have conducted many rounds of awareness campaigns and will continue these campaigns but the deterrent approach is also required on a war footing, he said.
