You can now get an Android phone for $80

Chinese company ZTE on Friday launched an Android phone for $80.

According to Mashable, the ZTE Tempo Go phone runs on Android Oreo's Go version -- a limited Android version for the entry-level phones -- and is only launched in the US.



With a 5-inch screen and a headphone jack, the phone does offer the more basic features. Android Go versions are intended to cater to developing markets such as India, where only around 22 per cent of the population used smartphones last year compared to 69 per cent of the US population.

Entry-level smartphone makers aim to cater towards the large remaining segment that hasn't shifted to high-end smartphones.

With the Go version of Android's latest operating system, low-end smartphones are likely to see a boost in the global smartphone market.



Android Go versions are also enabled to store “lite” versions of popular apps as they are not powerful enough to hold larger files. Lite versions of all major apps exist including Facebook, Instagram and Skype.
