Unsavoury stuff: Food authority raids university, schools canteens

PESHAWAR: At least three private schools and a university canteen have been charged Rs150,000 collectively over unhygienic and poor food safety standards in their cafeterias and premises.

The designated teams of K-P Food authority on Wednesday deployed in various divisional districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa conducted the raids in compliance with many objections and information received via social media.

While taking strict action against schools violating food safety and hygiene standards  Peshawar Food Authority Assistant Director Aneela Mahboob charged a public school Rs 40,000 for selling substandard, unlabeled, uncovered and unhygienic food products, injurious to health of students, in cafeteria.

She also served dozens of improvement notices to the schools and shops situated at Warsak Road Peshawar.

She also noted that Sarhad University of Science and Technology canteen was also found to be in a dirty state and unhygienic conditions prevailing.

Consequently, the canteen owner was charged Rs25,000.

Similarly, another Assistant Director Saira Nisar charged St. Francis High School Hayatabad Rs 60,000 over unhygienic condition of drinking water and cafeteria.

She said that the students of the said school were at the mercy of God as no administrative measures had been taken for improvement so far.

While visiting Hayatabad, Saira also took action against City School junior campus situated at Phase III over violating food safety standards and unhygienic water supply.
